Autonomy is the impression that people have the ability to make their own decisions and plans. When people have this in their work environment, they are more intrinsically motivated to work to the best of their ability.

This theory is the idea that in order for people to work to their full potential, they must have autonomy, competence and relatedness in their work environment. Theses three characteristics are called the basic psychological needs of an individual.

when someone feels competence in their place of work it means that they feel they are capable of the work content and quantity they have been assigned with. Ideal competence is a balance between a comfortable amount of work and healthy challenge

Relatedness is the idea that someone needs someone else to relate to in their workplace. This can come from collectively discussing some difficulties they are having at work, working on group projects where there is a solid group dynamic, or making friends at work that make the job feel more personal.

Intrinsic Motivation and extrinsic motivation are the are the main subcategories of motivation in organizational psychology. They suggest that motivation to get work completed can come from different sources.
