Concept
Self-Help Groups and Formal Medical Structures
While the NBWHP embraced the need for quality medical care, including mental health and psychiatric care, the NBWHP believed that quality medical care alone could not fully address how racism and sexism shape Black women's experiences of disability and disease. The Self-Help groups were clearly outlined as not therapy. This differentiation was made to make sure individuals in self-help groups saw each other as peers, to emphasize the lack of payment or needing to pay, and that the goal of self-help groups was wellness instead of elimination of symptoms.
