Self-Medicative Hypothesis

The self-medicative theory suggests that smokers with schizophrenia try to alleviate their negative symptoms through nicotine – a substance which increases dopamine and glutamate levels in the prefrontal cortex. This would counteract the ways schizophrenia would neurologically affect these smokers.
