Sensory Interpretation in Figure-Ground Perception

It is presumed that our ability to interpret sensory information depends on what we label as the 'figure' and the 'ground' in any given visual scenario. However, this assumption has been called into question by some researchers (e.g., Peterson & Gibson, 1994; Vecera & O’Reilly, 1998), suggesting that the relationship between figure-ground labeling and sensory interpretation may be more complex.
