The symptoms of Chagas Disease occur in three stages: 
- Acute: fever, headache, myalgia, rash, vomiting, diarrhea, and enlarged spleen, liver, and lymph nodes.
- Intermediate: little to no symptoms
- Chronic: painful swelling of the colon and esophagus 

Chagas disease is caused by the pathogenic flagellated protozoan *Trypanosoma cruzi* and is transmitted to humans by the triatomine bug.
