Small Business Dominance in Residential Electrical Contracting

According to the 2022 Economic Census and Nonemployer Statistics, roughly 79% of specialty trade contractor establishments in the United States are self-employed independent contractors with no paid employees. Among firms that do have employees, two out of three generate less than $1 million in annual receipts. These figures mean a new electrical contractor enters an industry of mostly small, owner-operated firms rather than large corporations—an environment where local reputation, responsiveness, and niche focus can matter more than scale.
