The loss of smell has been gaining traction as a possible biomarker  for COVID-19 following numerous ancedotal reporting from recovering COVID-19 patients. "Smell dysfunction: a biomarker for COVID-19" is a research study assessing the relation of smell loss to COVID-19. The findings of this paper suggested that some degree of smell loss is present in nearly all COVID-19 patients near the end of their acute recovery period (Moein et. al, 2020). Ansomnia, which is the total loss of the sense of smell, was found to nly be present in about one-quarter of COVID-19 patients in the study (Moein et. al, 2020). The research found by Moein et. al also connects the reported loss of taste with damage done to the olfactory system, highlighting that a loss of taste as reported by COVID-19 patients is related to the loss of smell rather than to damage to the taste buds or taste afferents (2020).
