Social and Familial Determinants of Wealth in the 14th Century

An individual's economic prospects in the 14th century were largely determined by their parents' position on the economic ladder and their gender. This societal structure was evident in the distinct titles held by the rich and the poor, such as feudal lords and serfs, royalty and subjects, slave owners and the enslaved, or merchants and the sailors they employed.
