Values and goals comprise an individuals understanding of a society. An individuals self-perceived value is dependent on accomplishments they do not have in common with others. The relevancy of abilities and traits are framed (determined) by societal goals and pursuits. Honneth also ascertains that groups struggle amongst each other to promote that the abilities they promote are more valuable to broader societal goals.

Intimate relationships engage individuals in complex emotional interactions. These behaviors notably include trust,  affection, attachment and a balance between symbiosis and self-assertion. When these kinds of relationships are successful, there is a mutual recognition of independence yet confidence in there being continuous shared concern.

Self-respect and social-respect is tied to one's ability to exercise his rights through a legal process. Evidence can be found in past political movements and their focus on empowerment to overcome feelings of social shame through active protest and resistance (rejecting the imposition).
