One example of how Price and Salzer wrote the questions in ways that held both audiences in mind is that participants were asked to identify their disabilities based on diagnosis categories from fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) but participants were also asked in an open-ended question to write their own self identification.
