Sources of Lead Exposure: Construction and Consumer Products

Historically, lead was widely used in construction materials and consumer products, which remain a major source of exposure today. Key sources include deteriorating lead-based paint in homes built before 1978, lead dust from renovation activities, lead pipes and solder in plumbing systems that contaminate drinking water, and residual lead in soil from the past use of leaded gasoline.
