Spinal Cord Reflexes

The spinal cord can process certain sensory inputs and trigger immediate motor responses without consulting the brain. This process, known as a reflex, involves a signal traveling from a sensory nerve to a processing center within the spinal cord, which then issues a direct command to a motor nerve. This rapid pathway is a crucial survival mechanism, as it saves critical time by bypassing the brain, allowing the body to react almost instantaneously to potentially harmful stimuli.
