Steps of Writing Science Fiction Space Opera: Conceptualization

Conceptualization, the first phase of writing a science fiction space opera, is where the story's broad outlines are drawn. It groups three sequential steps:

  • Step 1: Define the scope — set the scale of the story (e.g., galaxy-spanning versus a single solar system) and its implications for travel, communication, and conflict.
  • Step 2: Create the setting — develop the universe's physical aspects (planets, stars, galaxies) and societal aspects (governments, factions, societies).
  • Step 3: Outline the main conflict — identify the central struggle that drives the narrative, such as an interstellar war, a galactic quest, political intrigue, or a personal vendetta.
