Steps to Diagnosing Personality Disorders

The DSM-5 outlines 3 steps to assessing personality disorders:

  1. Asses whether the individual's personality is seriously impaired, and if so asses the degree of dysfunction
  2. Assess whether or not at least 1 of the 6 types of personality disorders is present
  3. Asses the degree that the client is characterized by each of the 5 maladaptive traits
