Strategies for Fostering Group Cooperation

Imagine you are designing an online platform where users can voluntarily contribute time and effort to a shared, open-source project. To encourage contributions, you are considering two strategies:

  1. Transparency: Make each user's past contribution levels visible to all other users.
  2. Punishment: Allow users to spend a small portion of their own resources to penalize other users who contribute very little.

Based on the principles of conditional cooperation and social norms, evaluate which of these two strategies is likely to be more effective at sustaining long-term contributions to the project. Justify your choice, explaining the potential positive and negative effects of each strategy on group behavior.
