Social scientists are wary of using data created online because of the struggle of accurately and rigorously accounting for both online and on-site information. 
There is also caution of putting too much focus on online information as a substitute for on-site data. A balance is needed as online and on-site data in the modern age is greatly intertwined during a disaster.

The platforms created allow individuals to learn about the disaster in real-time. These platforms allow individuals from all over to communicate and provide support or aid. These communications being put online allow disaster researchers the ability to gather more information/data.
