The original summer slump study follows the children participants from kindergarten spring into first grade fall. The student participants had to pass a language assessment to determine their proficiency in English to then proceed on to a reading assessment  (phonological awareness, familiarity with print, letter/word recognition, sight word, recalling, interpretation, and evaluation) to determine literacy scores. Then a multivariate linear regression with the ordinary least square method determined the literacy rates. The reading related summer activity data was collected through a questionnaire given to the parents in the fall of first grade for their child (not at all, once or twice, 3-6 times per week, and everyday).

Data Collection for Literacy Loss in Kindergarten Children During COVID-19 School Closures

The summer slump study used to make COVID-19 literacy loss predictions had a sample of 18,170 students drawn from both public and private schools that started Kindergarten in the 2010-11 year. The paper refers to this study group as ECLS-K:2011 (early childhood longitudinal study-kindergarten:2011).  However, the study focusing around parents reading to their children discussed in the paper only considered 3,170 of those participants, excluding those with incomplete information.

This study uses data from a large national longitudinal study on literacy loss from regular school closures during the summer amongst kindergarten students and then uses this data to predict the future literacy loss impact of extended school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since activities like summer school, library visits, and summer literacy activities are not available due to COVID-19 closures, this study looks into an alternative covid-safe option (reading to your kids at home) to determine its effectiveness in mitigating literacy loss amongst Kindergarten children during the pandemic. The study uses U.S. literacy scores to model literacy loss.
