The NFB was established in 1940 after activists for blind people established pensions for the blind and for an increase of public awareness towards understanding the needs of those who are blind. The NFB created the Braille Monitor, which typically includes events, activities, and various social concerns of the blind. 

National Federation of the Blind

DAV supports veterans and their families (transportation, benefits, meaningful employment, resources) by helping them access the resources, jobs, etc. they desire after returning from service. 

Disabled American Veterans 

5 current priorities the organization is focused on: 
- Achieving equity and resources for deaf education 
- Highlighting the lack of ASL exposure 
- Addressing diversity and dismantling racism 
- Allowing deaf seniors access to quality care 
- Amend Foster Care Bill of Rights to include more specific and effective needs 

National Association of the Deaf 

Started in 1975 
Supports and advocates for the civil rights of people with disabilities (and cancer) 
Organization plays an important overall role in regards to bringing cases to court, increasing rights, and eliminating discrimination 


Disability Rights Legal Center 

Founded in 1979 that is led by people who either have disabilities or parents of children with disabilities. The organization is the leading center for national civil rights law and policy. They focus on improving the historical consequences of the lack of accessibility from segregation and institutionalization.  

Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund

There are several different federal, state, and/or local organizations both associated and not politically associated with the Disability Rights Movement: 
   - National Federation of the Blind 
   - Disabled American Veterans 
   - National Association of the Deaf 
   - Disability Rights Center 
   - Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund 

University of Rochester

Encompasses those who have or who advocate for mental, physical, intellectual disabilities. Have had various successes (i.e. ADA in 1990) and continue to seek more adequate rights.

It’s important to note that the disability rights movement is primarily focused on the collective human, civil, social, and legal rights for people with disabilities, in comparison to the disability movement advocating for more inclusive cultures and environments and seeking direct assistance (see  Public Attitude Toward Disability node for more explanation).
