While this study provided a good overview for why social media users would choose to use tone indicators in their messages, it doesn’t really delve into the audience’s interpretations of the messages. A potential follow up study could have readers interpret a message with and without a tone indicator, and see how the readers may interpret the text differently based on the use of /s, /j, or others.
