There are some features and properties of synset gloss, and certain instructions to construct it. For example, Jarrar (2006) defined gloss as “a useful mechanism for understanding concepts individually without needing to browse and reason on the position of concepts”, and they emphasized that each synset developer should follow a set of gloss writing rules. Below are 6 rules for writing a gloss proposed in their study:

Synset resources such as lexical databases and dictionaries can be very useful for gloss extraction or computation. For example, Purnama et al. (2015) proposed a supervised learning approach which extracts gloss for Indonesian synsets automatically. They used web documents containing the gloss of the synsets, and conducted preprocessing, features extraction, and classification.

Synset Gloss Validation

Synset gloss contains background information about the synset. To evaluate it, Zhang et al. (2011) introduced a model that can measure semantic relatedness between gloss and synset, where they used the WordNet gloss and semantic relations as features that builds concept vectors.
