Target Behavior in Shaping

In shaping, the target behavior is the ultimate desired behavior. Because it is extremely unlikely that an organism will display a complex target behavior spontaneously, trainers do not wait to reward only the target behavior. Instead, they reward successive approximations until finally only the desired target behavior is reinforced.
