In Section 62 of the 'Hadiqat al-Haqiqah', Sanai employs the story of a grocer and a clay-eating customer to illustrate how base desires and addictions lead to self-destruction and allow for exploitation. The grocer uses clay as a counterweight for sugar, knowing the customer will steal and eat the clay; thus, the customer pays for sugar weight he never receives because he consumes the counterweight himself. This didactic tale on the deceptive nature of worldly appetites is the direct literary precursor to Rumi's later adaptation of the same story in the 'Masnavi'.
