- There is often tension between people with disabilities and the able-bodied populations. This creates a problem during the identity formation process in the presence of disability because oftentimes social and healthcare support is composed of able-bodied individuals. Essentially, ableist messages can become pervasive and disrupt the opportunity to create a positive disability identity.

Individuals who view disability in terms of the medical model may disrupt the potential for the people with a disability to form a positive disability identity by placing too much emphasis on ability and other internal factors.
