The Dilemma of Funding Knowledge Creation

A university research team develops a groundbreaking mathematical theorem that could revolutionize data encryption. The theorem itself, once published, can be used by anyone without diminishing its availability to others, and it is nearly impossible to prevent someone from learning and using it. Given these characteristics, construct a well-reasoned argument for or against using public funds (i.e., taxes) to finance such research, instead of relying on private companies who would seek to restrict access to the results.
