Because the medical model presumes disability to be a personal problem, it ignores variations in illness and impairment. Thus, impairment is not always temporary and does the fit Parsons “sick role” criteria because this theory does not account for those with chronic illness.

The medical model is highly revolved around rehabilitation and the idea that the individual can “fix themselves”. This has led to misleading ideologies of what constitutes the subjective disability experience. Additionally, this resulted in society unintentionally displaying oppressive behavior towards the disabled community.
