The Fundamental Challenge of a Specialized Society

Imagine a small, isolated community where each family traditionally produces all of its own food, clothing, and tools. The community leader proposes a new system where each family will focus on producing only one item—either just food, just clothing, or just tools—with the goal of becoming more productive overall. Critically evaluate the most significant new problem this community will face if they adopt this new system. In your evaluation, judge whether the potential for increased production alone is enough to guarantee the community's success.
