His star appeared in the heavens, to the blindness of Pharaoh and of all his cunning and remedies. Day broke; [the king] said to him, 'O Imran, go and find out about that uproar and clamor.' Imran rode toward the square and said, 'What was this uproar? The king of kings has not slept.' Every astrologer was bareheaded, with torn garments, kissing the dust like mourners. Like mourners, their voices had grown hoarse from wailing and lament. Their beards and hair were pulled out, their faces torn; they had thrown dust on their heads, their eyes filled with blood. He said, 'Is all well? What turmoil and condition is this? This ill-starred year gives a bad sign.' They excused themselves and said, 'O commander, the hand of destiny has made us captive. We did all this, yet the royal fortune darkened; the king's enemy has come into being and prevailed. Last night the star of that boy appeared plainly on the brow of the sky, to our blindness. The star of that prophet shone in heaven; from weeping we became scatterers of stars.' Imran, joyful and glad at heart yet dissembling, struck his hand on his head, crying, 'Ah, separation!' Imran made himself angry and sour and went like madmen, without reason or sense. He made himself out to be ignorant and bore down on them, reciting many harsh words to the assembly. He made himself sour and sorrowful; he played his backgammon in reverse. He said to them, 'You deceived my king; you did not refrain from treachery and greed. You roused the king toward the square; you spilled our king's honor. You beat your hands on your breasts as guarantee: We will free the king from sorrows.' The king too heard and said, 'O traitors, I will hang you without mercy. I made myself a laughingstock; I squandered wealth to my enemies so that tonight all the Israelites would stay away from meeting their wives. Wealth is gone, honor gone, and the business remains raw: is this the help and conduct of noble men? For years you have taken stipends and robes of honor; you have consumed the realms as if they were guaranteed to you. Was this your judgment, your learning, and your astrology? You are boast-fed idlers, tricksters, and ill-omened. I will tear you apart and set you on fire; I will cut off your noses, ears, and lips. I will make you fuel for the fire; I will make your lost pleasure bitter for you.' They prostrated and said, 'O sovereign, if for once the devil outwitted us, for years we have warded off calamities; imagination is amazed at what we have done. It escaped us and the pregnancy became evident; his seed leapt and crept into the womb. But, seeking forgiveness for this lapse, we will keep watch on the day of birth, O king and lord. On his birthday we will set up observation, so that it will not be missed and this decree will not leap away. If we do not keep that watch, kill us, O one whose judgment thought and intelligence serve.' He counted day by day until the ninth month, so that the arrow of the enemy-piercing decree would not fly. Whoever makes a night-raid against decree is overthrown and drinks from his own blood. When earth makes war on heaven, it becomes salt-waste and raises its head from death. After nine months the king brought out his throne
to the square and made proclamation loudly:

"O women, go to the square with your little ones —
all Israelites, come out!

Just as last year the men received
robes of honor, and each of them drew gold —

heed! O women, this year fortune is yours,
so that each one may find what she desires.

He will give women robes of honor and gifts
and will place golden caps on the children too.

Whoever has given birth this month — heed! —
receive treasures from the steadfast king."

Those women went out with their little ones,
joyfully they came to the king's tent.

Every woman with a newborn went out of the city
toward the square, heedless of the ruse and wrath.

When all the women had gathered around him,
every male child was taken from its mother.

Their heads were cut off — for this is precaution —
so that the enemy may not grow and confusion not multiply.
