The Keyboard Conundrum

The QWERTY keyboard layout, common on most English-language keyboards, was designed in the 19th century to prevent mechanical typewriters from jamming. Modern, more efficient layouts exist that could allow for faster typing for everyone. Despite this, QWERTY remains the dominant standard. Briefly explain why a large-scale switch to a more efficient keyboard layout is unlikely to happen, even if everyone would be better off after the switch.
