Originally intended by author J. R. R. Tolkien to be published as one book, The Lord of the Rings was ultimately published as a three-book sequel series to The Hobbit. It focuses on the various members of the Fellowship as they meet, join forces, and work to destroy the One Ring and stop the Dark Lord Sauron from conquering Middle-Earth.
