In Poem 2 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar explores the incomprehensible nature of the Divine. He describes the intellect ('aql) as being driven to madness and the soul retreating in helplessness when attempting to describe God. Using striking imagery, Attar explains that upon the manifestation of the Divine light ('the candle of Your manifestation'), even the magnificent celestial sphere ('the peacock of heaven') abandons its grandeur to adopt the self-sacrificial devotion of a moth. This illustrates the complete submission and inadequacy of both human faculties and cosmic entities before the Divine presence.
