The Metaphor of Moses's Staff and Jesus's Incantation for the Saints in the Masnavi
In Book 3 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the physical form of the saints (awliya) and their speech are compared to Moses's staff and Jesus's incantation. Rumi explains that while the outward appearance of a saint is merely human, just as Moses's staff appeared to be ordinary wood and Jesus's words seemed like simple sounds, their inner reality is filled with divine power. The saint's human form, acting as an instrument in the hand of God, possesses the miraculous capacity to transform spiritual reality, split the seas of doubt, and resurrect dead souls.
