The Metaphor of the Drop and the Ocean of Knowledge

In the Masnavi, Rumi employs the metaphor of the drop (qatrah) and the ocean (darya) to illustrate the relationship between limited human intellect and infinite divine knowledge.

In Book One, Section 96, Rumi describes human knowledge as a fragile drop:

The drop of knowledge that You granted from before, connect it back to Your oceans.

Key Epistemological Themes:

1. Vulnerability: Isolated human knowledge is vulnerable to being absorbed by the physical body (khak-e tan) or dried up by earthly winds/desires (hawa).
2. Reunion through Grace: The only way to preserve and elevate this limited knowledge is through divine grace (inayat), which reunites the drop with the boundless divine ocean.
3. Fana (Annihilation): Just as a drop loses its individual boundaries when it enters the ocean, the individual intellect finds completion by surrendering to the divine will.
