The Modesty Expectation for Women

The modesty expectation is a gender role expectation that women should demonstrate humility rather than self-promotion. In professional contexts, research shows that when women violate this expectation by self-promoting, they may be viewed as competent but face a lower likelihood of being hired due to the perceived violation of their gender role (Rudman, 1998).
