The Parable of the Existent and Non-Existent Worlds in the Masnavi
This concept explores Rumi's parable in Book Five, Section 46 of the Masnavi, which contrasts the illusory physical world with the hidden spiritual reality. Rumi uses the metaphors of wind and dust, as well as the ocean and its foam, to illustrate human perceptual deception. The physical world (dust or foam) appears undeniably real to the senses despite being transient and inherently non-existent. Conversely, the divine spiritual realm (wind or ocean), which is the true, sustaining existent force, remains hidden and is only known through its effects or by intellectual and spiritual inference. The parable emphasizes that humanity often confuses what is truly existent with what is merely an ephemeral manifestation.
