The Pirate's Paradox: Reconciling Lawlessness and Internal Justice

A contemporary observer described pirates as 'the Scandal of human Nature' and individuals 'abandoned to all Vice.' Yet, it was also noted that these same groups maintained a strict sense of justice among themselves. Analyze this apparent contradiction. Explain how a group could be perceived as lawless and immoral by outsiders while simultaneously operating with a strong, internally-enforced code of fairness.
