The Rational Choice of a Messy Kitchen

A group of housemates all agree they prefer a clean shared kitchen to a dirty one. However, the kitchen is consistently messy because no single person wants to undertake the effort of cleaning it. Explain why the decision to not clean can be considered an individually rational choice, and how these individual choices lead to a result that is worse for the entire group.
