The study used concept analysis as a framework for conducting research on the definition of Adolescent friendships. The researchers reviewed seventeen articles and compiled the data. The researchers also used similar and contrary cases to identify empirical referents (measuring scales). This is how the researchers compiled their data.

The Concept Analysis Method requires first the identification of a concept and then requires the basis for the analysis. Then additionally, the research must illustrate applications of the concept, determine the explaining attributes, find similar cases and other cases in general, and defining empirical terms (measuring scales) to support the data.

Adolescent friendships are correlated with reduced suicidal tendencies, depression, and anxiety. The friendships also correlate with increased ability to manage chronic diseases, leading to better heath outcomes.

The study found that adolescent friendships were defined by support, trust, time, affection, intimacy, and conflict managing ability between two individuals. It found that the length of the attachment or distance (miles) between the individuals was irrelevant. However, the reciprocity of these traits between the two people was significant.
