Theophilis' impact on Ericka Huggins
Huggins credits seeing the true lack of care for Theophilis and other disabled children in the state institution, including a lack of social contact with other children, poorly fitting clothes, and a disregard for the kid's physical hygiene, as what propelled her to go to college to create an environment that allowed disabled kids to flourish rather than failing to support their education and development. In particular, Huggins sites how T was put in rooms with kids with all different disabilities from neurodiverse kids to children in wheelchairs and there was a lack of attention to the children's individual unique needs.
