Threshold for Classifying Experiences as Disordered

Common inner experiences and behaviors, such as anxiety or sadness, are only classified as disordered when they cross a certain threshold of severity and impact. Specifically, they must be highly disturbing to the individual or others, indicate a dysfunction in normal mental processes, and be linked to significant distress or impairment in social or occupational life.
