Taking the example of subthreshold depression, the majority of cases of clinical depression go unrecognized and untreated. Patients with subthreshold levels of depression exhibit high rates of health care use and require substantial medical care costs.

A major goal of the next generation of psychiatric epidemiology is to establish a more precise and clinically relevant baseline. 

Suggestion for revision

Dimensional models can avoid misleading effort to carve psychological functioning at nonexistent discrete joints. Dimensional models can provide explicit means for recognizing subthreshold conditions and facilitate the development of demarcation between normal and abnormal psychological functioning. 

Dimensional models might be more helpful

Categorical models of classification appear to be easier to use. Dimensional models are inherently more complex because they generally provide more specific and precise information.

Dimensional models could be easier to use because it provides a more valid and internally consistent means to describe a particular patient's psychopathology. 

A dimensional model might be less cumbersome because it would not require the assessment of numerous diagnostic criteria from overlapping categories to make illusory distinctions. 

Ease of usage II 

NOS is generally used when a clinician has determined that a mental disorder is present, but the person fails to meet the criteria for one of the existing diagnostic categories.
