- mice with disabled rod photoreceptors were transplanted with rod cells from healthy mice
- some rod cells integrated into their retinas
- they were able to regain vision
- vision gain was influenced by the amount of integrated rod cells

“Dry” type:
- less severe and more common
- caused by atrophy of retinal pigmented epithelium
- results in photoreceptor death
“Wet” type:
- more severe and less common
- caused by abnormal growth of retinal capillaries
- results in detachment of the retina 
- also can cause photoreceptor death
