Treatments of Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder

Current interventions for this disorder include:

  • Augmentative and alternative communication (supplement/compensate for speech language production/comprehension including spoken and written modes of communication)
  • Computer-based instruction (use computer technology to teach language skills)
  • Video-based instruction (observational mode of teaching that uses video recording to model a target behavior/skill)
  • Comic strip conversations (conversations between two or more people illustrated by drawings in a comic strip to clows the conversation down, and provide more time to an individual to understand the information)
  • SCORE skills strategy (small group focuses on sharing ideas, complimenting each other, offering help, recommending changes nicely, and exercising self-control)
  • Social communication intervention
  • Social scripts (teaching children how to use varied language during social interactions and scripted prompts are gradually eliminated as children use them more spontaneously)
  • Social Stories (using stories to explain social situations and help learn socially appropriate behaviors/responses)
