A correlation was found between the dissemination of cardiovascular articles on Twitter and their online attention as captured by Altmetric scores and scientific impact measured by the number of citations. Researchers mentioned that a more comprehensive experiment, including the total 696 papers and two years of citation counts, is going to be published in March of 2021

Twitter promotion predicts citation rates of cardiovascular articles: a preliminary analysis from the ESC Journals Randomized Study

- Collected a total of 696 cardiovascular articles from 12 of the 14 journals found in the ESC (European Society of Cardiology) Journals from March 2018 to May 2019 to be randomized 
- Used Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar to obtain the number of citations each article got and Altmetric score to collect the number of users tweeting those articles
- 534 papers were chosen to be in the experiment – 264 were randomly assigned to the Twitter group and the remaining 270 were assigned to the control group 
- Articles in the Twitter group were tweeted approximately 28 days after they were published online 
- 79% of the citations were retrieved from Web of Science, 9% from Scopus, 12% from Google Scholar 
- Poisson regression model was used to determine correlation
