Types of Generalized Seizures

  • Absence (occur in children, cause staring into space or subtle body movements)
  • Tonic (cause stiff muscles and may affect consciousness)
  • Atonic (causes loss of muscle control)
  • Clonic (cause repeated jerking muscle movements)
  • Myoclonic (cause sudden or brief jerks or twitches of muscles)
  • Tonic-clonic (causes an abrupt loss of consciousness and body stiffening, twitching, and shaking)
