Up-regulation
A new medication is developed to treat a condition caused by the over-activity of a specific chemical messenger in the brain. Normally, this messenger binds to protein sites on a neuron, causing a specific response. The new medication works by fitting into these same protein sites, but it does not cause the response. By occupying the sites, it prevents the natural messenger from binding and having its effect. Based on this mechanism, how would this medication be classified?
