VEC and nitric oxide
Nitric oxide is released from VEC by a process called endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide is vasoprotective, meaning that is promotes vasodialation. It also can inhibit some important anti-atherosclerotic properties including leukocyte adhesion.
