A simple effect analysis is a statistical method used to break down an interaction to understand precisely what is driving the results. Because an interaction indicates that the effect of one independent variable depends on the level of another, relying solely on main effects can be misleading. To clarify the relationship, researchers use simple effects analyses to examine the effect of each independent variable at each specific level of the other independent variable, rather than averaging across those levels.

Simple Effect

In a factorial experiment, the number of simple effects analyses that can be conducted depends on the number of levels of the independent variables. Because a separate analysis of each independent variable is conducted at every level of the other independent variable, the total number of simple effects equals the sum of the levels of all interacting independent variables. For example, a $$2 	imes 2$$ design yields $$4$$ simple effects, a $$2 	imes 3$$ design yields $$5$$ simple effects, and a $$3 	imes 3$$ design yields $$6$$ simple effects.

Calculating the Number of Simple Effects

A study by Brown and colleagues illustrates an interaction effect by exploring memory recall differences based on an individual's level of hypochondriasis. The researchers hypothesized and found that participants high in hypochondriasis recalled negative health-related words more accurately than those with low hypochondriasis. However, both groups demonstrated similar recall rates for non-health-related words. This finding highlights a clear interaction, as the influence of the word type on memory recall is directly dependent on the participants' level of hypochondriasis.

Interaction Between Hypochondriasis and Word Type in Memory

In a study on caffeine and personality, researchers utilized simple effects analyses to break down a cross-over interaction. Rather than relying on a potentially misleading main effect of caffeine averaged across all participants, a simple effects analysis allowed them to examine the specific impact of caffeine separately for introverts and extraverts. Specifically, they found that $$4$$ mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight decreased performance for introverts but increased it for extraverts. Furthermore, they examined the effects of personality within each caffeine condition, revealing that introverts performed better without caffeine, while extraverts performed better with $$4$$ mg of caffeine. This $$2 	imes 2$$ design ultimately allowed researchers to explore $$2$$ main effects and $$4$$ distinct simple effects.

Example of Simple Effects Analysis

Schnall and colleagues demonstrated an interaction effect by investigating the combined influence of disgust and private body consciousness on moral judgment. Rather than conducting separate studies for each independent variable, they examined them simultaneously in a single experiment. The results revealed an interaction: the impact of the disgust manipulation on moral judgment was not uniform, but instead depended fundamentally on whether participants exhibited high or low levels of private body consciousness.

Interaction Between Disgust and Private Body Consciousness

A study by Schnall and colleagues demonstrates how simple effects analyses can clarify an interaction that renders a main effect misleading. Initially, a main effect indicated that participants in a messy room made harsher moral judgments due to disgust. However, an interaction showed that this effect depended on private body consciousness. By employing simple effects analyses to examine the effect of disgust at each level of body consciousness, the researchers revealed that disgust increased harsh moral judgments only for individuals high in private body consciousness, while it had no effect on those low in private body consciousness.
