What was the 504 Sit-In?
The 504 Sit-In is currently the longest occupation of a federal building, while protests started in 10 U.S. cities, only two lasted more than a few hours, the one in Washington, D.C. which lasted a day, and the one in San Francisco which lasted 25 days. The success of the occupation of the HEW building in San Francisco, which was only ended when federal regulations were signed, is often credited to the cross-movement organizing which brought together gay rights, women’s liberation, and civil rights groups in a “504 emergency coalition.”
