A non-manipulated independent variable is a factor in an empirical study that the researcher measures but does not actively manipulate or alter. These are frequently participant variables—such as gender, self-esteem, or hypochondriasis—which naturally function as between-subjects factors because an individual can only be tested in one condition of their pre-existing trait. A study incorporating these factors is still classified as an experiment provided that at least one other independent variable is actively manipulated.

Non-Manipulated Independent Variable

In experiments utilizing both manipulated and non-manipulated independent variables, causal conclusions can only be drawn concerning the manipulated factor. Because researchers do not systematically control or randomly assign participants to conditions of a non-manipulated variable (such as a personality trait), any observed effects might be the result of an unmeasured third variable. Consequently, findings related to the non-manipulated variable are strictly correlational.

Causal Limitations of Non-Manipulated Variables

In a factorial design study by Schnall and colleagues, private body consciousness was utilized as a non-manipulated independent variable alongside a manipulated variable. The researchers actively manipulated disgust by placing participants in either a clean or messy room, but they simply measured participants' pre-existing levels of private body consciousness. This illustrates how experimental studies often combine manipulated factors with measured participant variables to examine their joint effects.

Example of a Non-Manipulated Independent Variable: Private Body Consciousness

A study investigating memory biases in individuals with hypochondriasis serves as a clear example of utilizing a non-manipulated independent variable. In this experiment, researchers manipulated the type of word presented to participants (health-related versus non-health-related) while simply measuring the participants' pre-existing levels of hypochondriasis. The results demonstrated that individuals high in hypochondriasis selectively recalled more health-related words, highlighting how a measured participant variable can interact with a manipulated factor to produce distinct psychological outcomes.

Example of a Non-Manipulated Independent Variable: Hypochondriasis

A non-experimental factorial design is a study structure that includes multiple independent variables, but unlike a true experiment, all of these variables are merely measured rather than actively manipulated. Because every factor in this design—such as pre-existing participant variables—is solely measured, the study is non-experimental and correlational in nature. Consequently, while researchers can examine the relationships between these non-manipulated variables, they cannot use this design to establish definitive cause-and-effect relationships.
