The actor-observer bias is the phenomenon of attributing one's own behavior to external, situational forces, while attributing other people's behavior to internal, dispositional factors. This difference in attribution occurs because as 'actors,' we possess more information about the situational context influencing our actions. Conversely, as 'observers,' we lack this detailed information about others' circumstances, which causes us to default to a dispositionist perspective and commit the fundamental attribution error when judging their behavior.

An example of the actor-observer bias can be seen in how a person explains their own anger. If you were to come home and yell at a family member, you would likely attribute your behavior to situational factors like being tired or feeling unwell. However, an observer lacking that context might attribute your yelling to a dispositional factor, such as you being an angry person, thus demonstrating the bias.

Example of the Actor-Observer Bias: Explaining Anger

A study by Nisbett et al. (1973) demonstrates the actor-observer bias by examining how men explain romantic attraction. When asked to explain their own attraction (the 'actor' role), participants predominantly cited situational factors, such as their girlfriend's positive personality traits. They rarely mentioned their own dispositional traits, like a personal need for companionship. However, when explaining a friend's attraction (the 'observer' role), participants gave roughly equal weight to both situational factors (the friend's girlfriend's traits) and dispositional factors (the friend's internal traits). As illustrated in the accompanying graph, actors strongly favor external explanations for their own behavior, whereas observers use a more balanced approach when explaining others' behavior.
